Project Summary:
I worked with ACORN, a community organization established to organize and empower poor people. ACORN works primarily in the area of housing in the city. While doing research I did an internship for ACORN analyzing housing data. They used my findings for a bus tour they gave to politicians and journalists in the Summer of 1998 on housing issues in Philadelphia.
Home ownership is a tool toward fighting poverty. Low-income tenants have higher monthly housing costs than do homeowners. Low-income tenants also must pay a much larger portion of their monthly income on rent than people earning higher incomes. Yet low-income people rent more often than do people earning higher incomes.
